Ageinghood (Phase 2)

The AgeingHood Project, centered around the theme “Protecting the Livelihoods of Vulnerable Individuals in Klong Toey, Bangkok,” received funding from the AHRC. This research initiative spans a duration of 12 months and is a collaborative effort involving the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Sheffield (School of Architecture, University of Sheffield) in England and the Department of Architecture at Kasetsart University (KU) in Bangkok, Thailand.

The primary objective of this research endeavour is to delve into three key facets of human life in the Klong Toei community, namely, the aging population, housing conditions, and the livelihoods of those with limited financial resources. The overarching aim is to offer support to initiatives driven by individuals facing unsafe housing circumstances or the welfare challenges prevalent among Klong Toei residents, particularly the elderly who rely on these conditions for their sustenance.

In the context of this research, “living for a living” denotes the practice of residents utilising their personal spaces to engage in various small-scale businesses, thereby enabling them to support both themselves and their families. This project endeavours to shed light on these intricate aspects of life within the Klong Toei community, ultimately seeking to empower its low-income residents.
