Dementia is a progressive neurological condition affecting millions globally, with an estimated 131.5 million people projected to live with it by 2050. While pharmacological treatments dominate current approaches, sensory modalities—particularly olfactory stimulation—remain underexplored. The sense of smell plays a critical role in evoking memories and emotions, offering significant potential for enhancing dementia care environments. Emerging research suggests that olfactory impairment may serve as an early biomarker for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Beyond diagnostics, olfactory stimulation provides numerous non-pharmacological benefits, including improved sleep quality, enhanced appetite, and better balance. Integrating therapeutic scents into dementia care settings can evoke calming experiences and stimulate memory recall, aiding functional wayfinding, orientation, and emotional connection.
Observations from nursing homes and dementia care facilities highlight the underutilization of olfactory design. Poor ventilation—a common issue in renovated facilities—can negatively impact residents’ and caregivers’ quality of life. Traditional solutions, such as room sprays, only mask odors without leveraging the deeper therapeutic potential of scent. This project seeks to transform dementia care environments by addressing these challenges through improved air quality and the strategic use of natural fragrances. This initiative aims to foster familiar, comforting environments that evoke a homelike atmosphere. Key objectives include enhancing memory recall and emotional connection through olfactory stimulation. Improving overall well-being and daily experiences for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Addressing poor ventilation by creating health-promoting, pleasant environments with natural scents.
Participants will reconnect with their sense of smell through curated fragrances designed to evoke positive emotions and meaningful memories. Inspired by the promise of sunrise and new beginnings, selected scents include:
- Rosemary: Enhances memory and cognitive function.
- Bergamot: Calms anxiety and fosters relaxation.
- Pomelo: Uplifts mood and promotes emotional well-being.
- Geranium: Reduces anxiety and enhances concentration.
- Juniper Berry: Relieves tension and purifies the air.
These natural fragrances create a multi-sensory experience symbolizing hope and renewal. By stimulating the senses, the project aims to foster social awareness and personal connections, reinforcing the importance of olfactory design in dementia care. As an inclusive medium, this natural air refresher is suitable for all age groups, minimizing stigmatization. Made from 100% natural ingredients, it prioritizes safety and promotes alertness and concentration, offering a holistic, therapeutic solution for dementia care environments.
